Collision ClaimsPosted by confusedseller627

at-fault driver's insurance offered me $3,200 for a repair my shop quoted at $7,900 - the games they play are exhausting

so back in april some guy rear-ended me at a stoplight on his phone. clear-cut, he admitted fault on scene, his insurance (geico) accepted liability within a week. great, easy claim right? not even close. my car is a 2019 outback, ran fine but the rear quarter and bumper are toast, plus the tailgate is misaligned and theres a sensor warning for the rear collision system.

geico sends out their "field appraiser" who basically walked around the car for 12 minutes, took some phone pics, and emailed me an estimate for $3,200. the shop i wanted to use - which is a certified subaru shop ive used twice before - quoted $7,900 including OEM parts, blending paint on the adjacent panel, recalibrating the rear sensors, and a 2 day rental. the gap is wild.

i pushed back. asked for a supplement. their appraiser came back with $3,650. then i asked for a copy of their estimate line by line and you can see the games. they used aftermarket bumper instead of OEM, no paint blend, no sensor recalibration "unless the shop documents need," and zero rental. when i said no the field manager called me and got kind of patronizing about "industry standards."

here is what finally moved them. i had the shop write up a formal addendum letter explaining each line item, why OEM is required (advanced safety system on this trim) and citing the manufacturers position statement on collision repair. i sent that with a letter saying i was prepared to file a complaint with the state DOI and pursue a diminished value claim separately. two days later they kicked the estimate to $6,400 and approved rental coverage. still fighting on the last $1,500 but its progress.

the lesson i took away - the first number is never the real number. these adjusters are trained to anchor low. push back politely, get the shop on your side in writing, and dont let them rush you into signing anything that says "final."
