Finally got my $4,200 hospital bill covered after 3 months of appeals - here's what worked
I want to share this because when I was in the middle of it I felt like giving up every week. My insurer denied coverage for an outpatient procedure my doctor ordered, claiming it wasn't "medically necessary." The original bill was $4,200 and they refused to pay a cent of it.
What actually turned it around: I asked my doctor to do a peer-to-peer review with the insurance company's medical director. A lot of people don't know this is an option - your doctor can literally call their doctor and advocate for you directly. My doctor did that call, and within two weeks the denial was reversed.
Other things that helped: I documented every phone call with the date, time, and name of who I spoke to. I submitted a written appeal that quoted their own policy language back at them. And when the internal appeal failed the first time, I requested an external independent review, which is your right in most states.
If you're in the middle of a denial right now, don't give up. These companies count on you being too exhausted to fight. I'm happy to answer questions if anyone is going through something similar.
