Long Island flood claim - lessons from Hurricane Ida

Hurricane Ida flooding taught me a lot about New York insurance. Our basement flooded completely - first time in 20 years of owning the house.

Lessons: 1) If you dont have flood insurance and you flood, youre basically SOL. 2) NY has a program called FEMA ICC that can help with elevation/flood proofing after a claim. 3) Document everything with video not just photos - shows water depth better. 4) Keep receipts for EVERYTHING you throw out. We got $38k from NFIP but wish wed had higher coverage.
