Surprise billing nightmare - hospital was in network but the anesthesiologist wasnt
Had a planned surgery at an in-network hospital. Verified everything with insurance beforehand. Surgery went fine. Then got a $9,200 bill from the anesthesiologist who was apparently out of network.
I never chose this doctor. Never met them before surgery. Had zero control over who the hospital assigned. But somehow Im responsible for a nearly five figure bill because of their employment status?
Filed a complaint under the No Surprises Act. It took 3 months but the bill was eventually reduced to $400 (my in-network copay). The system works but you have to know about it and fight for it.
If this happens to you - DO NOT pay the initial bill. Look up the No Surprises Act and file a dispute. You have rights.
