What I learned from my first ever insurance claim - things I wish I knew
Just closed my first homeowners claim (wind damage to roof and fence). Whole process took 4 months. Here's what I wish someone had told me:
1. The first offer is ALWAYS low. They offered $3,200, my actual repair cost was $9,400. After pushback with contractor estimates I got $8,800.
2. Document EVERYTHING before you clean up. I almost threw out damaged materials before taking photos.
3. Get your own estimate before the adjuster comes. Knowing the real cost gives you leverage.
4. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. I called every 3 days. The people who dont follow up get forgotten.
Not trying to be negative about insurance companies but you really have to advocate for yourself.
